Description: The Adelong flock was established in 1970 and since that time, using the best Genetics available, a ruthless selection criteria, performance recording and DNA testing, we strive to breed sheep that are structurally sound, true to breed type, have good constitutions and excellent performance figures for growth, muscle, fat, fertility & survivability.
Our aim is to breed tough, easy doing sheep that have the ability to shift and thrive wherever they are used, both in New Zealand and around the world.
The 650 ewe flock is fully recorded with SIL and muscle scanned.
With the use of DNA testing of Foot Scores, we have sires & ewes in the flock with very good foot score figures.
Adelong sheep are shown at the Ellesmere & Canterbury Shows each year.
Since 2005, we have had our own on-farm Auction Sale, held on the 1st Wednesday of December annually, as well as selling privately on farm.
Adelong Stud are vendors at the North Island Stud Sale in Fielding & the Canterbury Stud Fair, selling 10-12 Stud Sires each year.

Description: The 2010 on-farm auction will be held on December 2nd at The Gums, 727 Leamington Road, Cheviot.
In 2009 for the first time, they sold rams through an on-farm auction in conjunction with Grant and Di Beckett’s Phoebe Suffolk stud and Collie and Liz Smith’s Bankhead Dorset Down stud.
Ian said the Stevenson family thought the timing is right to hold a combined sale with neighbours.
“We think this will give our clients and other sheep breeders the opportunity to inspect our entire ram selection of the various breeds.”
The Flaxton and Bankhead Dorset Down studs have been purchasing stud sires in partnership and using the same or very similar genetics over a period of many years.
Flaxton stud concentrate on meat yield and growth rates, which they feel are the most important financial drivers for successful prime lamb farming.
Stud sires must also pass the test on soundness and in more recent times must have a good DNA score for footrot susceptibility.
Flaxton stud also has halfbred rams available for purchase at the on-farm auction. The Rominos (Romney Ram x Poll Merino Ewe) and the Borinos (Border Leicester Ram x Poll Merino Ewe) are some of the most profitable breeds of sheep to be farmed under certain environments and management systems, Ian said.
By growing a fleece under 26 microns the financial impact on farm income is “huge” while still achieving high lambing percentages and lamb growth rates. All these rams are DNA and foot tested. [ more details ]

Description: Colin will be selling 40 stud rams at a combined ram sale with Ian Stevenson and Grant Beckett on December 2nd 2010.
A few stud rams will also be available at the Christchurch Stud Ram Fair in January.
Bankhead Dorset Down stud was first registered in 1964, and over the last 46 years has focused on producing top sires that will give early maturing prime lambs for the premium pre-Christmas market.
“A main focus of our operation is getting that early mean kill date so our commercial clients can get lambs away early, as well as producing a strong animal that will maintain condition in extremely dry periods,” Colin said.
Bankhead Dorset Downs are sold to clients all over North Canterbury. [ more details ]
